Open peer review

What is open peer review?

Open peer review, or transparent reviewing, can mean several different things. The key idea is to increase transparency, openness and reliability of the review process. In open peer review, various aspects can be open, such as the reviewer's or researcher's identity, the reviewed content, the review report, comments, interaction between the researcher and reviewer, the platform, or a combination of these elements.

Benefits of open review include:

  • Increasing the quality of the review process
  • Increasing the visibility of the reviewing process (as a work)
  • Improving the integrity of the research process
  • Facilitating collaboration

The video below offers a concise explanation about open peer review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o25ENtTy2vw).

Different types of peer review

In the picture below, one way of dividing peer reviews into different types is illustrated. When you are involved in the peer review process in some way, it is important to understand what type of review you are dealing with. Open peer review can increase transparency, give recognition to reviewers' work and make their reviews citable. Open peer review is not yet a very common practice, but there are some possibilities for you to choose open peer review.
