How to: find open access content

Finding open access content

The number of open access articles, journals and books that exist can feel overwhelming. Luckily, there are tools and services available to help researchers find and access OA content across the web.

The lists below include different kinds of tools that can be used either to find journals to publish in or to gain free access to full text articles and other open access material. The lists are far from comprehensive, but they will hopefully give you an idea of how to navigate in the open access landscape. Some of the listed items are multidisciplinary, while others are more focused on certain disciplines. In the first list, open access publications are recorded. The second list contains links to open access repositories.

Skip the paywall!

Despite the ever increasing volume of open access publishing, the majority of scientific articles are still behind paywalls. If you found an interesting article, but can't find it from LUT Academic Library's databases, it's worth a try to see if Google Scholar can find a final draft version of the article.

You can also utilize the DOI number based services listed below. DOAI and oaDOI help you find open access version of articles, if they are available. Open Access Button works the same way, but you can additionally send the OAButton team a request for an article you wish to be made available.

Unpaywall is a free browser extension for Firefox. When you view a paywalled scholarly article, Unpaywall automatically checks its open database of 16 million legal, open-access articles. If there is an open version somewhere, you'll see a green tab on the article.
