The objective of the research process is to make university's research results subject to public evaluation by the scientific community and available to be used in research and teaching. The research results are published for example in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
Research includes openness and comparability. Open Access publishing is today an essential part of the publishing process. In its strategy LUT is committed to promote open science. Opening e.g. publications and research data increases the visibility of an individual researcher and whole university, improves networking opportunities for researchers and increases citations over time.
In addition to scientific journals, books and conference proceedings research reports and other documents can be published also in LUT's own LUT Scientific and Expertise Publications and Acta Universitatis Lappeenrantaensis publication series'. These series are almost entirely in electronic form in the LUTPub repository. LUTPub is also a repository for parallel published manuscripts of the scientific publications in accordance with the Open Science and Research Policy for LUT Universities.
The metadata of the publications published by the LUT researchers is gathered to the LUT Research Portal. The publication data is reported to the national research information hub and the final publication data of all Finnish research organizations can be viewed and searched from the Research.fi service. Each year the ministry of education and culture in Finland collects comprehensive data on the university's publishing activities from this research information hub.
The university and schools set qualitative and quantitative goals for publishing activity that govern publishing. The amount and quality of the publication forum classified publications is one criterion in the universities' funding model.
